A heating cable ensures that heat is transferred to the place where you put it, which makes sense! A propagation bench is a good example of an application where a heating cable can come in very handy. A stable soil temperature can ensure that plants can develop much better. We are happy to explain which cable is best to use for your propagation bench and how to go about it!

Most plants develop best when the temperature is right. Large temperature fluctuations can have a negative effect on plant growth. Particularly in spring, when the nights are still colder than the days, plants struggle more with this. With a heating cable, you create a stable temperature, regardless of the season. This automatically ensures that plants you plant on your propagation table no longer suffer from temperature fluctuations. And this also improves growth.

For growers in an unheated greenhouse, a heating cable is also often used. It is often a simple and efficient solution. This cable can also be placed throughout the entire greenhouse. As a result, energy consumption in a greenhouse also remains lower than if you were to heat the greenhouse with traditional heating.

A heating cable used on a propagation bench or in a greenhouse must be robust and able to take a knock. This is because it has to be placed under a number of layers. We often offer a cable available in 20 or 30W per metre. This cable is robust and is frequently used for applications of this kind. Also, because it is available in many lengths, this cable is often the easy choice for the user.

This heating cable is a constant wattage cable. This means that the cable emits the exact same power along its entire length. This is very useful for a propagation bench or greenhouse, because the same heat is good for the development of plants and the like. Some form of control is always required with this cable, so that the user can manage the cable themselves and ensure it cannot become too hot. At Warmtekabel, we have many different controls available for this cable.

Tip from us: Do you want to outdoor placement scheme? Then choose a fitting with an IP rating of IP66 or higher. If you regulation inside places, an IP rating of IP24 is also sufficient.

How do you place a heating cable on a propagation bench?

When installing a heating cable on a propagation bench, it is important that the cable can dissipate its heat properly. If this is not the case, the cable can overheat and eventually fail. You will also notice that the effect of the cable is less noticeable, because the heat does not reach the place where it needs to be.

Often we recommend setting up a propagation bench with a heating cable as follows:

1

Growing table or surface

2

Heating cable in a serpentine pattern (allow for the necessary loop spacing)

3

A few centimetres of damp sand or gravel (another material is also acceptable, as long as it is heat-conducting material)

4

Plant pots, seed trays or propagation trays

When the setup is carried out in this way, you can be certain that the cable can dissipate its heat properly, and that you can make optimal use of the heat that the cable generates.

A heating cable is the ideal solution for improving plant growth and development in a propagation bench or greenhouse. Do you have any further questions about using a heating cable for your application? Feel free to contact us; we are happy to help you with tailored advice and the right products!
