Frost can cause unnecessary damage to storage areas, technical installations and buildings. Frozen water pipes or damaged equipment can entail significant costs. To reduce these costs, and to keep your application frost-free, we have a number of products in our range that heat your application when frost is approaching. We at Warmtekabel are happy to explain how best to use these heating elements against frost!

How does frost protection work?

Frost protection essentially entails using products to ensure that your application does not drop below freezing point. This can be a space, such as a garage or shed, but also industrial installations that are not properly resistant to frost, water pipes or other equipment.

At Warmtekabel, we have countless ways to ensure that your application does not freeze. In practice, we often see heating cables, frost convectors or heaters being used. Of course, this does depend on the application and what you want to keep frost-free.

Which form of frost protection is best to use?

When determining the correct frost protection, it is important to first clearly establish what you want to keep frost-free. If it is a room, for example, a heating cable does not make much sense. Instead, a frost convector or an electric heater is more suitable. If you want to keep a gutter, a propagation table or a pond frost-free, then a heating cable will serve you well.

Heating cables

The most common way of keeping certain applications frost-free is heating cables. These cables are applied directly to the place you want to keep frost-free. These can be pipes, but also trees, tables, ponds and gutters. Many of our heating cables are self-regulating. This means that the cables adjust their output to the ambient temperature. This prevents these cables from becoming too hot, and they can even be placed over each other.

When regulation is desired, we also have constant output heating cables. These cables deliver the same output over the entire length of the cable regardless of the ambient temperature. Because they do not fluctuate in temperature, regulation is required here to be able to control the cable from a distance. On this controller, you can switch the cable on and off, increase the temperature or lower it. The temperature emitted by the cable does depend on the chosen output of the cable.

frost convectors

To keep small spaces frost-free, such as garages or sheds, a frost convector places. This comes with its own thermostat, which you can control step-by-step. The thermostat has 6 settings, from 5 to 35 degrees Celsius. When the ambient temperature drops below the set temperature, the frost convector turns on automatically.

This frost convector is available in two variants, 200 and 400W. For rooms up to 8m3, you can very well use the 200W. If you have a room of up to a maximum of 16m3, then it is best to use the 400W.

It is also possible to use an external thermostat with the frost convector. By using an external control, you can operate the frost convector remotely. However, when using an external control, the thermostat located on the convector is disabled. Therefore, there is only one control option with this frost convector.

Electric heater

When slightly more power is needed than 400W, we often recommend a electric heater as well. It can also be used to heat a room instead of just keeping it frost-free. The output of this electric heater starts at 500W and goes up to 2000W.

When keeping a room frost-free, we always recommend allowing for 50 to 75W per square metre, depending on the insulation. When you want to heat a room, allow for 75 to 100W per square metre. When heating, the required output also depends on the insulation.
